On Being Lyrical

2:24 PM

"The photographs are quiet, lyrically poetic, and intellectually provocative."
- Cambridge Dictionary

I was scrolling through my blog posts and found one I wrote back in 2017 about “how to be lyrical". In that post, I gave readers tips on creating lyrical work, mainly focusing on drawing inspiration from music. This involved analyzing personal feelings when listening to melodies or interpreting lyrics if they exist.

Now, 7 years later, I realize that doesn't fully answer the question of how to be lyrical. So, what does it mean to be lyrical? In the past post, I mentioned it as a verb meaning “expressing the creator’s emotions in an imaginative and beautiful way.” While that's one way to describe being lyrical, I want to emphasize the word “emotion.” Expressing a feeling that exists inside and lasts for some time is not easy, especially when creating imagery. To achieve an expressive yet artistically beautiful quality is tricky, particularly with unusual or ambiguous feelings. After years of practicing being lyrical, there are times when I need other sources to guide me in digging deeper into a certain emotion I want to convey. Symbolism helps a lot, but creating that emotion for the audience so they feel it too takes time. I realized that not everyone can feel a certain emotion unless you provide some visual aid or other guidance. Some people with similar knowledge to mine can understand what I'm talking about immediately. However, not everything is based on personal experience, is it?

For example, a few months ago, I created a personal work called “Consciousness.” It was not the same concept of consciousness as Freud’s; it was another concept known as the “spectrum of consciousness” that I found accidentally on the internet.

The proposed spectrum of consciousness (S.L. Thaler, 1996d)

Based on that concept, I needed to create three different images for each stage presented. I had to differentiate each one by using different colors, compositions, or poses. Thanks to Sasa, my talented Hungarian model who is also a professional contemporary dancer, she managed to give me different feels through her movements and expressions. She delivered each stage of “consciousness” effortlessly.

Day dreaming

Denying reality

Near-death

Check out the full version here

For "daydreaming," I used white boxes and random elements, along with a sky-blue dress, to symbolize an imaginary, relaxed, yet confusing world. It's full of curious things but in a good and happy way. For "reality," I wanted to show how often we deny our reality and how distorted and cruel it can be. I used yellow as the neutral tone to represent human quality. The movements created by Sasa here were more "closed" and "painful" than the first ones. For the final stage, the "near-death" phase, the overall tone was much darker, and Sasa's movements were more violent, creating a blurry effect. It was like a shadow, leaving one's self behind as a representation of regret at the edge of life. On the other hand, the poses were grander and larger than the previous ones, because I believe death is more significant than life due to its eternity.

Selecting the right objects, tone, and other visual elements in a lyrical work is more crucial than choosing the best model, dress, concept, or whatever it is. Focus on the deeper emotions you feel while creating the art and imagine what your audience will see. Keep these two points in mind, or even imprint them in your heart.

Can you now understand what it means to be lyrical from my explanation?

Tips on How To Be Lyrical

2:18 PM

When you type "lyrical" in Google, this will come up:

Yes, "lyrical" doesn't always mean the lyrics of a song, but it also a verb, to express emotions with an imagination and beautiful way. Both words and feeling can influence you to make an art, a real prove of your emotions. I like to call myself a "lyrical photographer" because in that way, I will always remind myself to express my ideas, my emotions, in a beautiful and full of imagination into my art.

Maybe some of you are still confused, then what's the difference between this kind of art with a conceptual art?

Well... In my opinion, conceptual art is more about you pick a certain concept or a certain idea and make it into an artwork.

Something like this?

Tree Face by Yannis Koutras

Some artworks have an obvious message that the artist wants to deliver or portray to the audience. Although, conceptual art is also a good way to express your emotions into an imagery.

Now, how this lyrical art works?

Since it's "lyrical", there are two kinds of artwork: a single piece of art that express the overall feeling or a series of pictures that represent each of the ideas that we want to portray. Most of my lyrical works are based on songs (obviously). Not only based on the lyrics, but also on the overall vibe of the song, the feeling that you get from it.

Still remember my Late Night Tales from 2013?

Breathe
I still remember, that time, I was so obsessed with To Build A Home by The Cinematic Orchestra in one of the Step-Up movies. After I searched for more, I fell in love with their music style. So I was thinking to make a series of single artwork, as a tribute, based on their songs and use their album title as the title of the series too, Late Night Tales. As you can see from the series, each artwork represents what is in the song, either containing the same imagery that the lyrics mentioned or just expressing the feeling of the song.

On the other hand, to create a series of lyrical art, it requires a well-planned process than making a single artwork; Planning from the mood, tone, pose, and everything that support the subject. The upgraded version of my lyrical art piece (pardon me, it is really an upgraded one) is Lana Del Rey's song in 'Maleficent', back in 2014, Once Upon A Time.

This particular shot reflects the "I know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam..." part of the song. For this series, I worked with the help of my friends and created a small team for this. We listened to the song over and over again, read the lyrics over and over again. We have to make sure that the pictures are telling the story of the song and represent each lyrics. However, during the shooting, most likely unexpected things would happen, so we have to make small changes from our original plan. It's really normal for me to have more great spontaneous shots than the well-planned ones. HAHA.

To be lyrical requires a lot of practice and also meditation. Yes, I'm serious. Meditation is required to know your own self and to be aware of your own feelings. That's the hardest part in this particular style. Well, even for me, it was hard at first. I don't even know who I am. As I open myself and starting to sense and understand my own feeling, it become more and more natural for me to express myself whenever I create art pieces.

So, here are some tips when you want to do a lyrical art (my own advice):
1. First impression of the song really matters. When you listen to a certain song and you don't feel that it "see" through your heart and tickle it since the first melody, stop right there.
2. Lyrical art is about interpretation. The more you listen to it and learn the lyrics (if it has lyrics), your imagination can wonder around easier and imagine a certain scenery of the song. It requires practice and sensitivity.
3. If you cannot imagine a perfect scene for the song, follow the lyrics. If it's an instrumental song, search for the music video of that song. It may help you to create the artwork.

.

To whoever you are, to those people who want to make art or trying to appreciate art,
learn yourself and be lyrical.

2016 SHOWREEL

10:24 AM

Hello again, everyone! How you guys are doing?
It's almost the end of the year again, so it means that it's time for RECAP of what happened in 2016.

First, I would like to thank you for all your supports and likes in my Instagram. My Instagram is flooding with your likes and comments. I really appreciated it :)

Well, since I'm no longer working in the studio again (I'm an office lady now :p), I don't really have much free time for my personal work. However, I'm trying to still do it as often as I can because it's my passion and my second job too. I'll stay creative :)

OK, let's move on.

Since I moved to Seoul, I got a lot of chance to work with foreign models. Don't judge me, but I do prefer foreign models than the Asian. Although, many Korean model agencies has recruited a lot of unique faces, but I feel like Europeans have a lot more variant and diverse face features, each of them are different. And of course, another good point, that their face features match with my concept. So, on this moment, I would like to introduce you the foreign models that I've been working with in 2016.

Emma (Netherland)

Iida (Sweden)

Alexa (Russia)

Lisa (Norway)

Embla (Norway)

My roommate, Arianna (Italy)

Tabya (German)

Lily (France)

Sasha (Russia)

Tschennie/Jenny (German)

Pretty, aren't they? Honestly, I really enjoyed taking pictures with them because not only you get to know them and get your artwork, but you also learn each other's cultural background. We talked about our countries' political condition, cultural issues, etc. It was mind-blowing. There are things that you will not know about a certain country other than having conversation with the natives. Media are sometimes fake and not digging deep enough.

Other than working with foreign models, this year I got a chance to meet, take pictures, collaborated, and be friends with beauty bloggers/Youtubers. I met these two beautiful ladies from my friend, Musa, who used to shoot pictures with one of them.

Let me introduce you...

Sunny Dahye

Kim Dao

Our Christmas collaboration

This powerful duo has been friends for 6 years (?) and they always together. I will link their Youtube channels below. As some of you may know, Sunny is a Korean who used to live and grew up in Indonesia. She speaks Indonesian like a native, like me. I still remember the first time I met her, I was shocked of how fluent she is. It feels like me talking to my Indonesian friends, not to a Korean. And Kim, she's a Vietnamese who was born and grew up in Australia and currently living in Japan. Three of us are the same age, the 90s, so no wonder that every time we meet, we just talk shit and sometimes having deep conversation (just because we like to criticize haha). I'm lucky to be one of their friends.

So yeah.. I guess it's almost the end of my not-so-long post. I really want to post everything here but I just don't have time and energy to do it.

Make sure you follow my Instagram here for my artwork updates.

I will launch my official website SOON (I really hope I can do it fast), so bare with me!
To end this post, I would like to share my favorite pieces from 2016.

Hymn to Hope

11:45 PM

Heyyy everybody! How's your days?
I'm graduating already and now i'm on my way to pursue the next thing in life, that's MAKING MONEY! oh my God, my head.

So, I haven't introduce this guy formally here but I think I've mentioned about him in my previous posts. One of my best friends, Evan a.k.a Papercaptain, is doing his personal project nowadays. Honestly, I really want to do something together with him, collaborating or something but I don't think it's possible since Evan is really a busy person. Then I asked him for a special request, draw something for me. HAHAHA. Well, I had this song in my mind since a long time ago but I haven't had a chance to do something about it.

Hymn to Hope, composed by Secret Garden, a really famous new age artist. I've been in love with these guys and I found a vocal version (in Korean) of that song, sung by Youngok Shin. This song gives you hope, literally. After I translated the lyrics myself to English, I was kind of sad. The song was supposed to be give me hope to live but then I realized that the meaning is too tragic for me.

"난 돌아왔죠.. 세상의 끝에서..." (I'm coming back.. When the world ends..)
"때론 지치고.. 힘들고 서글퍼도..." (Sometimes it's tiring, difficult and troubled..)

It seems like it's about the END. I don't know why but I'm dropping tears when I listening to this song. OK. Back to the story. Then, I asked Evan to draw something from this song. Based on this song. He asked me which part of the lyrics I liked the best. There's this lyric,

"세상의 모든 꿈.." (All the dreams of the world)

This particular part, when I first heard it, I felt.. peace. The dreams of the world? It's so beautiful, isn't it?

And finally, this is what Evan came up with.

He combined it with Japanese art style and also its folklore, Kaguya. I was so surprised when I found out that Kaguya have red black ombré hair!
Looks like the fashion sense of our Papercaptain is finally come out eh?
Well, it's a wraaapp!
